Health Insurance

For insured students from an EU Member State – EEA – Switzerland

In case of sickness or accident, the patient must hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to apply for health insurance from his country or a provisional replacement certificate (PRC).Persons covered by a social security scheme of another European Union Member State, a State party to the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement or Switzerland (insured persons and family members) generally benefit from coverage for their medically necessary health care (not covering scheduled care) received during their temporary stay in France.

To benefit from this care, the interested parties must present, at the time of their admission to the hospital (with supporting proof of identity), their EHIC or, failing that, a PRC, delivered by their institution of affiliation. The EHIC (or the PRC) allows its holder to be treated as if he were insured by a French health insurance scheme: thus, any person covered by the plan of another Member State must pay only the remaining share, as with a person insured under a French scheme who does not have supplementary health insurance (if applicable: excesses, hospital fees, 18 euros etc.)

For students coming from areas other than the EU – EEA – Switzerland

Non-EU students not insured by a Member State must be in possession of private insurance. If the student does not have private insurance, the cost of care and the hospitalisation must be covered by the student or their family before their departure from France.

Non-EU students can benefit from a tourist visa obtained with proof of accommodation for a person living on French soil. These documents include a commitment to meet the needs of the travelling foreigner. This commitment is however not valid to cover hospitalisation costs. Request a quote from AXA Insurance.

Practical life: tips

In France, tips are left to the discretion of the customer, but appreciated by all service and catering staff. In restaurants for example, it is customary to leave about 5% of the bill as a tip.
