400,000 years ago, the first inhabitants of Nice, elephant hunters, settled on the Terra-Amata site.
In 300 BC, the 'Massaliotes' founded NIKAIA, a trading post by the sea.
From 13 BC , the Romans built a second town, CEMENELUM, close to NIKAIA and situated on the Cimiez hill.
Then,
in the fifth century, CEMENELUM was abandoned in favour of NIKAIA.The Saracens ransacked the town in 813 and spread their domination to the whole of eastern Provence.
In 1388, NICE sought the protection of the Count of Savoy, Amédée VII.
In 1543, the attack from the Turkish fleet was repelled thanks to the courage of the Nice population symbolised by Catherine SEGURANE.
Following the 1691 and 1705 sieges, the French army destroyed the town fortifications. Nice remained loyal to the Duke of Savoy.
In 1792, Nice was invaded by the French revolutionary troops and the Alpes-Maritimes Departement was created in 1793.
Having been returned to the King of Sardinia in 1814, NICE and its county definitely became part of France in 1860. Nice and its region also then took the name of French Riviera.
